"Was du nit waißt das solt du fragen, las dir das ain geleerten sagen"—Insights into the Data Analysis of the Repertorium Academicum Germanicum (RAG)

For as long as universities have existed in Europe (Paris and Bologna since around 1200), scholars have competed with non-academic experts, and taught knowledge has conflicted with practical and everyday knowledge. The Repertorium Academicum Germanicum (RAG) has set itself the task of tracing this process of competition and exchange between knowledge carriers and knowledge domains. The RAG database currently offers biographical and knowledge-based information about individuals and collectives on almost 64,000 scholars from all countries of the former Roman-German Empire (Germany, Switzerland, Benelux, Austria-Hungary, Czech Republic, parts of France and Italy) for the period from 1250 to 1550. In the RAG, persons qualify as scholars who have at least the academic degree of a Magister artium or equivalent. The talk provides insights into the dynamic visualisation of contextualised biographies, networks, communication spaces, etc.
