Studies in History, Sociology, Philosophy and Psychology in Cologne, Münster, and Gießen. 1974 PhD. 1985 habilitation for Medieval and Early Modern History at the Justus-Liebig-Universität in Giessen. 1985-1989 lecturing Medieval, Social and Economical History at the Universities of Osnabrück, Bielefeld and Giessen; Professor for Medieval History at the University of Berne from 1989 to 2008. Emeritus since 2008.
Social- and constitutional history; histories of ideas and culture of the high- and late Middle Ages; history of the crusades; history of cities and migration; historical geography; histories of universities, of education, and of sciences in medieval and early modern times.
